For a closer analysis of how the Internet can be utilised by musical subcultures --
especially those that are underprivileged in a marketplace currently still dominated by the
interests of major music and media corporations, and that are thus forced into tactical
approaches for the maintenance of their subculture and the making and distribution of their
music --, it will be useful to focus on one particular genre-based subculture, instead of
conducting a discussion in more general terms. The genre and subculture chosen here, then,
is that of Progressive Rock: as will become evident from this section, Progressive Rock is not
only a subculture especially at odds with the traditional structures of the music industry
(and thus much in need of the new tactical opportunities opened up by the Internet), but,
due to a particular demographic and ideological fit between typical Progressive Rock fans
and Internet users, it can also be found to be very much at the forefront of music
communities' constructive usage of the Net. In order to arrive at these conclusions, however,
it is necessary to give an overview of the Progressive Rock subculture and its fan community.
