"Every Home Is Wired":
3 -- The Progressive Rock Community on the Net
<

Repetition of historical and other established knowledge: Marc Smith states that

emotional involvement in a collective takes two forms: renunciation and communion. The former highlights the abandonment or diminishment of relations outside the collective, the latter highlights the process of incorporating group identification into individual identity. Communion involves the positive construction of affective solidarity. Ritual practices, sometimes woven into productive practices, restate and reassert the ideological principles that justify membership and commitment. (n. pag.)

While closely related to the preceding area, this field thus centres less on demarcation from the 'other', and more on the positive and productive 'rituals' of knowledge discussion and propagation that are central to this subcultural community (and most others). Since all of the topical areas constitute a continuum rather than a set of hermetically distinct categories, questions like 'what is Prog?' and canon-related issues are also to be found here, then, though less with a view to comparisons and boundary demarcations, and more with one to a definition of and by itself: rather than the continued readjustment of the canon of the previous area, this area covers the practical use of the existing canon as a common ground in discussions.12 Bit 25
