Additionally, the makeup of that marketplace is also significantly influenced by the increased mobility of the world's populations: "migrations of populations and the formation of cultural disapora ... have transformed the global circulation of cultural forms, creating lines of influence and solidarity different from, but no less meaningful than those observable within geographically circumscribed communities" (Straw, "Systems" 369). By this new definition, then, a 'local' subculture, held together by a shared ethnic identity or cultural taste, for example, might not reside in a unified geographical area anymore (even though it may historically have originated from one), but it comes together in a shared 'local' forum made possible by the new globalised media -- and here particularly the Internet with its superior facilities for community participation.6 | Bit 16 |

At this point it is necessary to clarify what is meant by the terms 'subculture' and 'community'. As their conjunction in the expression 'subcultural community' shows, they constitute in many ways two sides of the same coin, and are thus almost interchangeable. For the purposes of this paper, 'subculture' will be used to denote the material and conceptual structures and institutions amongst a group of individuals that is brought together through shared interests and tastes or a shared identity; 'community', on the other hand, involves the articulation of these structures through interaction amongst the members of such a subculture. This is similar to the Saussurean distinction of langue and parole, or that by de Certeau of place and space: just as parole is practiced langue, and space is practiced place, so community is, and arises from, the practices of subcultural interaction and articulation -- hence, too, the difference in the titles of sections two and three. | Bit 17 |
