"Every Home Is Wired":
4 -- Towards a Strategic Progressive Rock Community
<

Thus, "the novelty of the Internet, and the varying alacrity of major industry players to embrace the new medium, have offered minor and/or 'independent' recording companies [an] ... opportunity to attract attention to their operation, artists and products" (Hayward 30). In the online marketplace, therefore, they operate as strategic institutions, having assumed places "that can be circumscribed as proper ... and thus serve as the basis for generating relations with an exterior distinct from it", as de Certeau describes the aim of strategy (xix). Centrally, this has been made possible by the lack of strong controlling institutions on the Internet, where, as Rafaeli remarks, "the organising principle is to have no organisation, or deliberate, orderly, anarchy" (Newhagen & Rafaeli 5), and where places are thus there for the taking. Rec.music.progressive and alt.music.yes as well as the numerous Prog Web sites are such places which have been taken by the Prog community.2 Bit 6
