5 It is thus not dissimilar in function from today's samplers, which also play pre-recorded sounds. <
6 The geographic distribution of Prog is also interesting. Its historical centre is the U.K., but important contributions have been made elsewhere, too: a significant number of Italian bands have primarily produced symphonic Prog, while Scandinavian bands have combined such influences with a more folky approach or preferences for a mid-1970s King Crimson style. French and Belgian Prog is also strongly influenced by that era of King Crimson, and mainly responsible for chamber Prog; German Progressive Rock has combined spacerock, psychedelic rock, and some symphonic and ambient influences into a local sub-genre of its own, usually referred to as Krautrock. Bands also exist or have existed in other areas of the world, such as Spain, North and South America, Australia, and Eastern Europe (the latter are only now becoming known to Western fans); in Japan, with its a relatively large Prog fan base, the tendency has mainly been to copy individual bands quite closely. <
