The computer-mediated nature of this communication also allows readers to use various technology-dependent means of picking out interesting information from the whole. In FtF communication, there are few ways to screen out undesired contributions from a free-for-all discussion, there are no brief subject descriptions (however inaccurate) of a statement, nor 'skip discussion' buttons or search tools; on the other hand, the Net places the responsibility for such screening necessarily with the readers, who have few other gatekeepers to help them. "The message keeps its own gate, carries its own homing device. The Net treats censorship as noise and is designed to work around it. ... This technical fact has content, social, and sender-and-receiver results. Especially high-volume newsgroups like rec.music.progressive and alt.music.yes, then, covering heterogeneous fields whose discussions will not all be relevant or interesting to the individual reader, encourage the use of various mechanisms to reduce the volume of incoming information and find its most pertinent elements. The methods employed to this end centrally include filtering and scanning: filtering refers to the screening out of particular participants or thread topics, and today is a feature of most newsreader programmes. It is, however, a fairly blunt tool of limited usefulness: for example, pre-set filters will screen out yesdick's posts, but not the meta-discussion he caused, and will also remove the occasional worthwhile posting from a filtered participant; filtered threads, on the other hand, may evolve into more interesting discussions which will still be screened out, or may change subject headers and reappear in spite of the filter, yet still contain no valuable information.
